What makes a useful job description?

Say which room or part of the property is affected, what the symptom is and when it began. Mention whether the water can be turned off, whether more than one outlet is affected and whether the problem happens all the time or comes and goes.

For planned work, include the number of fittings, whether old items need removing and whether walls, floors or cupboards are already open for access. A few precise facts are more useful than guessing at the cause.

Plumbing, drainage or gas work?

A plumber commonly works on water pipes, taps, toilets, basins, showers, radiators and hot-water systems. A drainage specialist may be more suitable for blocked or damaged drains outside the property. Work on a gas boiler, gas appliance or gas fitting must be completed by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

Not sure who to ask? Choose the closest description and explain what is happening. If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, get urgent help rather than posting a quote request.
